From Tired to Timeless

This 1900 Bungalow originally began with a much smaller footprint than the 1,234 square feet that it now boasts. When we first toured the property it consisted of 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, a large laundry area, kitchen and living room. A small addition had been added to the back end of the home swallowing up the original exterior cellar entrance creating 24 square feet of dead space. The porch had been enclosed with windows and the front door was moved to the side of the home. Because the porch floor was 6" lower than the main living space, and the space was void of any heating or cooling ducts, this change made the addition virtually unusable. Some of the other rooms were large but lacked flow and function. The bathroom was extremely small with an awkward layout, the laundry area was oversized but also housed a large basement trap door.

In order to make the most of this property, a full demo was completed. The new floor plan made this home a 3 bedroom, 2 bath home with all new plumbing and electrical. But what did we do to add function to that enclosed porch area and cellar area? We leveled up the floor in the front of the home and stole a little space from the main living area to create two 10x10 bedroom/flex spaces. The former cellar area was broken up to house a nice sized master closet, the laundry room and a walk-in pantry. The 3'x8' basement trap door is barely even noticed in the walk-in pantry and 100% functional and accessible if ever needed. This house is an example of what is found in many older homes. You sometimes see spaces that are no longer functional for a modern day family or additions that don’t always make sense, but when you re-evaluate the layout you can turn an older home into a perfect space for the life you live.
